Zoology and Z Guide - Resources and Review

Guide to Internet resources in the zoological and other related biosciences of interest to zoologists.

Database of descriptions, photographs, and classifications of the world's mammals, birds, amphibians, reptiles, sharks, bony fish, molluscs, arthropods, and echinoderms, searchable by common or scientific name. Some records also provide information on habitats, physical characteristics, food, reproductive habits, and geographic range.

Table listing specific characteristics, including skeleton, respiration, habitat and digestion of each classification group within the animal kingdom.

This service provides networked access to the BIOSIS Previews database, which is the electronic version of Biological Abstracts, the largest printed reference publication for life sciences research information, and Biological Abstracts/RRM (Reports, Reviews, Meetings), the companion printed reference to books, meetings, and research reviews. Thousands of life science journals, as well as international meetings and books from more than 90 countries, are monitored for inclusion in BIOSIS Previews. The database contains bibliographic information from 1985 onwards for traditional areas of biology such as botany, zoology, and microbiology, as well as related fields such as agriculture, pharmacology, biophysics, ecology, bioengineering, and experimental clinical medicine. Subscription required.

Material about dragonflies, fish, reptiles and amphibians, birds and mammals.

The Whole Frog project is intended to introduce the concepts of computer based 3D visualisation and to demonstrate the power of whole body, 3D imaging of anatomy as a curriculum tool. It aims to offer biology students the ability to explore the anatomy of a frog and visualize the anatomical structures of the intact animal.by using data from high resolution MRI imaging, mechanical sectioning, 3D surface and volume rendering.

Factual information on a range of animal species, describing the diet, habitat, and reproductive cycle of each. Users can browse by class, selecting from mammals, birds, fish, reptiles, amphibians, invertebrates, endangered or extinct, and prehistoric, within which specific species are listed alphabetically. An interactive map provides an alternative mode of access. Content is offered in English and French.

A distributed Internet project containing information about phylogeny and biodiversity. The project is designed to contain information about the phylogenetic relationships and characteristics of organisms, to illustrate the diversity and unity of living organisms, and to link biological information available on the Internet in the form of a phylogenetic navigator. The project aims to provide a map to biological information to be used by researchers, teachers and students.

The Museum's mission is to maintain and develop its collections and use them to promote the discovery, understanding, responsible use and enjoyment of the natural world. Its collections of over 68,000,000 specimens, gathered from across the globe, represent more than 300 years of scientific collecting and study and are at the heart of the institution's scientific research, information services, education and exhibition activities. Online displays include Life Galleries, Earth Galleries, Wildlife Garden and VR trilobites.

Lecture material covering areas like protists, porifera, cnidaria, acoelomates etc. The course is taught at the Department of Evolution, Ecology, and Organismal Biology at the Ohio State University.

Set of links to journals relevant to livestock science and zoology. Some have only subscription information online, others have tables of contents, abstracts or full text.

Set of annotated links to online courses, course descriptions, tutorials, assignments, tests and other materials used in the teaching of zoology.

A forum for zoologists interested in the biology of shrews (Soricidae, Insectivora, Mammalia).

Catalogue of links which cover natural resources and energy, palaeontology, biology, botany, and zoology.

MSW contains the names of 4,629 currently recognised species of mammals, in a taxonomic hierarchy that includes Order, Family, Subfamily, and Genus. Data from the book by Wilson, D. E., and D. M. Reeder (eds), 1993.

Annual index to worldwide zoological literature, first published in 1864. It is available in print, compact disc and online formats, providing access to world literature via author name, taxon name or subject, geographical and palaeontological terms.

Journal covering animal thermoregulation, respiration, circulation, osmotic and ionic regulation, environmental acclimation, evolutionary physiology, and metabolic physiology and biochemistry. Tables of contents available.

Searchable database wich contains photographs, information on bird specimen handling, bird dissection and a glossary of avian external anatomy.

Bibliographic database of published literature on the ecology, conservation, and management of North American waterfowl and their wetland habitats. Searching is by author, title, keyword, or year. An alphabetical keyword index is also available.

A collection of biological science resources for teaching and research. Includes articles, lectures, activities, diagrams and images for a range of subjects such as botany, cell biology, ecology, palaeontology and zoology.

Time
lapse recordings and confocal images dealing with the developmental biology of fish. The main features are the time-lapse recordings and still image gallery of micrographs taken from scanning-laser confocal microscopy and fluorescent vital stains of developing fish embryos.

Contains current valid scientific avian names and nomenclature information (including full citations) organized by order (from Anseriformes to Upupiformes) for over 2,000 Genera and 9,000 species. The resource may be browsed alphabetically.
